My name is Kathryn. I have worked in the counselling and social service world for over 10 years.
It's really important to recognise when we need some extra support. It can also be scary and hard to admit. I have worked in the counselling and social service world for over 10 years, and I can help you
re-create wellness and find 'you' again.
I've worked with clients who were struggling with anxiety, anger management, relationship issues, grief and trauma, and drug and alcohol issues.
For some people, it will just be a couple sessions to sort through an issue that you’re currently facing and develop some skills.
For others, there might be more work to do. But it will always be an ongoing discussion between us about what progress we’re making, whether we are still meeting your goals, and what more we might need to do.
I am a full member of the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers (ANZASW).
Alcohol, drugs, gambling
We live in a culture where drinking, and sometimes drug taking, is accepted as a way to relax, de-stress, cope. But it can easily slip into something more, and instead of being a support it can start to cause you problems.
I have worked in a residential treatment centre for people with co-existing disorders (mental health and substance abuse or gambling issues). This means our clients were all struggling with depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, emotional regulation issues, or other mental health issues.
Often they were using drugs or alcohol or gambling to help them cope. My roles included individual counselling, group work, facilitation, clinical oversight and staff management. I still do some work for my old employer, and I've also done some project management, and programme delivery for other companies. I also provide Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) support.
Since 2012 I have been delivering training to the Alcohol and Other Drugs workforce in a number of areas, including treatment models, co-existing problems, addiction basics, boundaries, assessment and group work. My role has also involved providing supervision and clinical support to a team of professionals.
I also offer support in my private practice to people suffering from alcohol, drugs or gambling.
I have lived in Queenstown for nearly five years, and have been working as a counsellor in private practice for almost as long. Prior to that I worked primarily for NGOs in Auckland.
I love my job. I honestly believe that it is a privilege to work alongside people as they face some really tough issues, support them to build new skills and watch them flourish.
I'm passionate about working alongside you.
