Joanna | Somatic and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Somatic Mindful Psychotherapy Christchurch

Hello, I’m Joanna. With over 18 years of experience as a holistic health practitioner, I’ve had the privilege of working and studying across Europe, South East Asia, and New Zealand, integrating the wisdom of Western and Eastern medicine systems. Currently, I provide short- and long-term psychotherapy (somatic and psychodynamic talking therapy) from my cozy clinic nestled in the beautiful Heathcote Valley, Christchurch.

I have a deep interest in developmental and relational trauma (complex trauma, cPTSD) and the integration of body and mind. With my background in medical and somatic training (see below), I bring an understanding of the body’s role in psychotherapy, allowing “body talk” to emerge in sessions. This approach enriches the therapeutic process, helping to reveal unconscious narratives and core beliefs.

I am also interested in embracing opposites, particularly the dynamic between life and death. I strongly advocate for normalising conversations about death and grief, recognising their essential place in our human experience. Over the past decade, I have dedicated myself to studying these topics and processing my own relationship with death and the concept of "necessary losses." The insights and understanding I've gained on this journey inform my therapeutic work, allowing me to create a safe and supportive space where you can feel held during moments of fear, anger, confusion, doubt and grief.

In my work, I integrate the wisdom of both somatic and talk therapy, drawing from Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (CM), Somatic Psychotherapy (Hakomi), Internal Family System (IFS), Jungian StudiesBrainspotting, and other complementary approaches (see below).

I’m also passionate about the intersection of psychotherapy and art, welcoming creativity and play as a vital part of our collaborative work.

I am a registered psychotherapist, and my work is supervised. As a lifelong learner, I regularly attend workshops and webinars. Outside of my professional work, I value long walks, qigong practice, watching films, and reading as ways to slow down, be present and restore balance.

Please get in touch with me if you want to know more or make an appointment.

"There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you." - Maya Angelou

“Therapy is first about discovering. It’s about who you are and about what your deepest emotional attitudes are. It’s not just about who you think you are. It’s not something you can know with the intellect. It’s about who you are in the very heart of yourself. That’s the flavour of psychotherapy, discovering yourself, discovering your real attitudes toward the most important pieces of your life." ~ Ron Kurtz, Hakomi Founder

Specialisations and Expertises

Psychotherapy sessions in English or Polish.

I provide therapy exclusively through in-person sessions. Online sessions are available only for established in-person clients in cases of illness or travel.

Three Core Psychotherapeutic Models I Integrate in My Work with Clients:

* Somatic Mindful Psychotherapy is a client-led, relational approach grounded in the principles of mindfulness, loving presence, non-violence, unity, organicity, and wholeness. It invites deep listening not only to the words we speak, but also to the story the body quietly tells. Through this attuned awareness, we can uncover and process unconscious beliefs and unresolved trauma. This approach supports those navigating stress, anxiety, anger, depression, grief, pain, or psychosomatic symptoms, as well as those seeking to build confidence, transform limiting patterns, and gain greater clarity and understanding of themselves.

* The Conversational Model of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is a relational, flexible, jargon-free model of talking therapy. Clients can experience a positive and supportive relationship that helps them develop a full expression of themselves. It is dedicated to clients with a wide range of difficulties, including relationship issues, developmental trauma and personality disorders.

* Brainspotting Therapy, neuroexperiential model developed from EMDR and offers a slower, more attuned way of working with the brain–body connection and processing trauma. Using focused eye positions helps access where unprocessed emotion and memory are held beneath awareness. This process invites what has been frozen or hidden to surface and release - allowing the nervous system to find greater balance, presence, and flow. It can be especially helpful for trauma, anxiety, and stress-related difficulties, or whenever words are not enough.

I’ve gained so much from working with her

I’ve been seeing Joanna for about a year, and she has helped me deeply with relational challenges rooted in my childhood that I continued to struggle with in adult life. Her somatic, mindful approach has opened up completely new ways of understanding how my body has been holding the score of past trauma—how protective patterns that once kept me safe had become barriers to healthy, connected relationships.

Joanna introduced me to ideas like “necessary losses” in a way that felt grounding and compassionate, and she always creates a supportive, safe space where I feel fully comfortable to explore whatever comes up. Her presence is calm, insightful, and incredibly validating.

I’ve gained so much from working with her—both in self-awareness and in practical shifts that have made a real difference in my day-to-day life. I’m very grateful for the work we’ve done together and highly recommend her to anyone seeking somatic or relational healing.

I can’t recommend Joanna more highly

I can’t recommend Joanna more highly.

Whilst I have done counselling previously, I was looking for someone who would have a more holistic approach. Joanna’s somatic mindful psychotherapy helped me identify how my anxiety was also having physical effects and assisted me to develop ways to counter this. We also developed strategies to acknowledge past experiences and move forward.

Joanna is kind, professional and caring. I always felt safe and supported during my sessions.
