Jen | Registered Counsellor

Introduction

Kia ora,

You might be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, stressed, or stuck in patterns that feel hard to shift. Many of the people I work with are managing on the outside, but internally feel exhausted, low, or emotionally overloaded.

I offer counselling in Christchurch and online for adults experiencing anxiety, stress, low mood, relationship difficulties, and life transitions. I also support people dealing with emotional overwhelm, trauma-related experiences, and the impact of a loved one’s mental health or behaviour.

My approach is warm, grounded, and collaborative. Together we explore what’s going on beneath the surface, identify unhelpful patterns, and develop practical ways to create change, improve emotional regulation, and build clarity and direction.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting .........we can work through it together.

Online therapy

Yes, I offer online counselling via Zoom for clients who prefer or need to meet remotely.

Online sessions are a secure, one-to-one video space where we meet in real time. You will just need a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone.

Online therapy follows the same structure as in-person sessions. We focus on what’s going on for you, explore patterns and challenges, and work together on insight, emotional understanding, and practical strategies for change.

While in-person counselling can feel grounding for some people, online sessions can be a helpful option when travel, work, childcare, health, or distance make attending in person difficult. Many clients find online therapy still feels connected, supportive and effective.

Qualifications and registrations

I hold a Bachelor of Counselling, a recognised professional qualification that includes training in therapeutic practice, ethics, human development, and client-centred counselling. This aligns with counselling standards in Aotearoa.

Alongside my core training, I have specialist experience in addictions counselling, supporting individuals and families impacted by substance use and the relational and emotional stress that can come with it.

I also have training in Addiction, creative and somatic therapies, which allows me to integrate body-based and expressive approaches into sessions. This can be helpful when words are not enough and a more embodied way of working is needed.

My practice is informed by ongoing professional development, including continued learning in somatic and embodied approaches, so my work remains current, grounded, and responsive to different client needs.

I am committed to ethical practice, ongoing supervision, and professional accountability as part of my counselling work in New Zealand.

Specialisations and Expertises

I work with adults navigating a range of emotional and life challenges, including:

  • Anxiety, stress, burnout, and emotional overwhelm
  • Depression, low mood, and loss of motivation
  • Relationship stress, including toxic, controlling, or emotionally harmful relationship dynamics
  • Family challenges, boundaries, and communication difficulties
  • Impact of a loved one’s addiction, substance use, or mental health difficulties
  • Emotional crisis, suicidal thoughts, and supporting family members in distressing situations

These are common concerns people bring to counselling, and I offer a grounded, supportive space where we can slow things down, make sense of what’s happening, and work toward meaningful change in a way that feels manageable and realistic for you.

What to expect in sessions

Counselling is a collaborative process shaped around your needs, goals, and what feels most supportive for you at the time.

Sessions are typically 50 minutes, and the rhythm of sessions is flexible and guided by what you need—whether that’s more regular support at the beginning or spacing sessions out as things stabilise.

We start by understanding what’s bringing you in and what you want to shift or strengthen. From there, we explore patterns, increase insight, and develop practical tools to support emotional regulation, clarity, and change.

Some people prefer short-term support (6–12 sessions) for focused issues like stress, transitions, or coping strategies. Others engage in longer-term work for deeper relational patterns, emotional healing, or trauma-related experiences.

We’ll regularly check in together to ensure the pace and approach continue to fit your needs.

Most common issues I support people with:

Anxiety & stress
Ongoing worry, panic, overthinking, burnout, or feeling constantly overwhelmed in daily life.

Depression & low mood

Feeling stuck, flat, unmotivated, or disconnected from life and things that usually matter.

Relationship difficulties (including toxic or emotionally harmful relationships)

Struggles with communication, conflict, disconnection, or navigating relationships that feel confusing, draining, controlling, or emotionally unsafe. Support for rebuilding self-trust and clarity after difficult relationship experiences.

Trauma & emotional overwhelm

Feeling emotionally overloaded, triggered, or impacted by past or ongoing experiences that affect safety, confidence, and emotional regulation.

Impact of a loved one’s behaviour or mental health on wellbeing

Support for people affected by a partner or family member’s addiction, emotional instability, controlling behaviour, or other challenging dynamics, including boundary setting and emotional recovery.

Fees

My counselling fee is $80 per 50-minute session.

I aim to keep counselling as accessible as possible while offering consistent, professional support. If cost is a barrier, there may be funding options available that can help reduce financial pressure.

I am WINZ-affiliated and can support clients who are eligible for the Disability Allowance. This can include providing documentation and helping you understand the application process.
