I am Joanne-Marie and I am an arts therapist.
I am offering online arts therapy.

'When we find our own solutions we empower ourselves.'

I guide you to discover your answers through the 'surprise' element of the arts, bypassing the egoic mind and allowing reconnection with the deeper parts of yourself, so that you learn to empower yourself.

Using the arts in this way is not about making 'pretty pictures' or being 'artistic'. It is about the process of expressing and making discoveries from it.

Expressing might be making marks on paper or forms out of plasticine or a collage of images torn out of magazines or movements with your body or words thrust together in poetry, and more. Practices such as breathwork, visualization or mindfulness may also be incorporated to aid you in your expressing.

From here, I guide you to make meaning of your expressions. This is usually through talking or writing or a combination of both, and is more akin to standard counselling.

So who am I?
I have a lifetime of experience in personal development and spirituality. I have studied and worked in both the sciences and the arts. Arts therapy brings all of this together. I began working with clients and other professionals, including a clinical psychologist, in July 2021, while living in Central Otago. I have recently moved to Motueka.

Online therapy

Online arts therapy is through zoom. You will need the following...

  • a computer (desktop or laptop with a mouse) or a tablet with a pen. It is possible to use a smart phone but this will likely restrict our ability to do these sessions. All technology requires a working camera and microphone, and a good internet connection. 

  • A safe and private space where you will be free from interruptions during your session. Optional use of headphones aids confidentiality although it does restrict movement.

  • Some basic art supplies such as paper, pencils, felt pens or pastels or whatever you have on hand (additionally zoom has a whiteboard that we can use instead of physical materials, provided you have a mouse or pen to use with your computer or tablet). I may ask you to collect natural materials, found items, old magazines etc for some sessions, prior to the session and dependent on your circumstances.

I specialise in helping adult woman reconnect with themselves through the medium of the arts. These woman are often Mums who have spent, or are spending considerable time prioritising and nuturing family, and have become stuck, burnt out and/or overwhelmed. 

I also specialise in guiding men and women through emotional expression, particularly grief.

Session number varies. I will use the arts firstly to build a relationship with you, to help you feel safe and comfortable, before we delve deeper. Sessions are often about learning 'how to feel' again- something we tend to lose through encultured suppression, as we grow older. Once you are able to feel your emotions again, you can become much more self aware and more able to connect with your inner self. 

I am currently offering online self care sessions in an initial block of six at a discounted rate of $450 when paid up front. Please contact me for more information, including a free 15 minute phone consultation.
